Cocktail
parties are
social gatherings, often held during the cocktail hour, at which cocktails and other alcoholic beverages,
hors d'oeuvres, and
canapés are served. Notice that author bold the word 'social'. This means that people that you have met during your high school (secondary school), college days, your employers and maybe even your future business partners. Therefore, the author advises you to
look sharp and appropriate for the occasion, not to look like
brides man in a party filled with people with shorts and polo
shirts (overdress) and not also to look like a fool (cock) in a party filled with professionals (blue collared).
Here is a guide to
dress for the occasion:
1. Author ask to consider the source of invitation (what and where the invitation is coming from). If it came from an email, text messaging (
sms) or
msn messenger, chances are that the party is very casual such as
BBQ party. If it came from a letter or any other official documents to invite you to the party, author consider it as a
dressier affair.
2. *Only applicable to places with seasons. Author suggests
wearing lighter-weight fabrics and brighter colors for spring and summer get-
togethers. Author also suggests sticking to dark, muted tones in heavier fabrics for fall and winter gatherings.
3. Author consider cocktail parties on weekend afternoons less formally than those scheduled in the evening. Author tells to be creative and get
dressy business casual for a more formal late-afternoon gathering but opt for a suit in the evening. For a less formal event, author consider
wearing a nice casual outfit in the afternoon and dressier business casual clothes in the evening.
4. If it is a formal after-work cocktail party, author
suggest a more casual business outfit; something more comfortable but still looks like a businessmen: preferably a blazer to khaki pants and a button-down shirt, or pair a sport coat with black jeans, a black mock turtleneck and go for dark leather loafers or lace-up shoes. Never ever wear sandals or athletic shoes to any formal cocktail party even if it is the most casual, formal party on earth!
